Tetris DS.

I managed to stop playing Tetris before the battery on my Nintendo DS ran out. This is the first time I’ve managed to do that in the five days that I’ve owned the game.

If you’re the kind of person who spends a lot of time thinking about the optimal Tetris experience, then Nintendo’s tweaks of the old formula probably leave something to be desired: the ability to rotate a block endlessly while it settles into place, the six-piece lookahead, the irritating shadow that shows you where your piece may or may not land. The new modes added to the game are also of dubious value, ranging from the uninspiring (Puzzle) to the just plain weird (Catch).

None of that matters, though, because Tetris is Tetris, and Nintendo has done the only thing they needed to do to make the game even more of a distraction than it already was, adding online multiplayer that’s as easy to get into and as hard to get out of as Tetris itself.

Oh, you can, and I did. I was just saying.

On the other hand, I didn't think I would like the Hold slot at all, but it's been growing on me as I play.

yeah, i too have come to love the hold slot. last night i got matched up with someone with a ~6500 rating (mine was a mere 5500 at the time). whooped me five games in a row before i realized he was holding sticks, then killing me with double tetrises. i fought fire with fire and won the next four games! then i bailed with a 6000+ rating. whee!
