The only thing worse than not having a job is having a job. The only thing worse than that is looking for a job.

It finally occurred to me that the longer I sit around worrying about how bad my resume is, the longer I’ll sit on the thing; the longer I sit on the thing, the longer no one will see it; and the longer no one sees it, the longer I’ll be unemployed. So I might as well let everyone see what I’ve got, and have them tell me how awful it is.

If anyone has resume-writing advice, or knows of a good source for that sort of information, I’d appreciate it.

Edit: Thanks for all your suggestions, folks. I’ve taken down the resume, though, since 1) I’m moving sites and haven’t gotten around to transferring the files; 2) I need to do some more revisions anyway; and 3) I have no idea what I would do with the thing even if it looked good.

Why did you split Retek out into 2 jobs? I don't think I've ever seen that done before.

Because of the two job titles. Makes sense to me... You could probably reformat it to make the 'these two jobs are at the same place' thing a little clearer, though.

When I (spent way too long) writing my resume, I took the five or six job titles I had at Retek and reduced them down to three. It meant that I had enough space to reasonably describe them (I spend most of it on the more recent ones), yet it doesn't look like I did one thing for five years, or I was hired out of college into the last job I had.

From a formatting perspective, the way I have usually seen this handled is to have one heading with a company name and city, and headings under that for each job and its dates.

There are some examples of how we format our resumes (not that there is anything particularly interesting or correct about it) here.

As an aside (and continuing the tradition of picking on the site in the comments), what freakin' timezone is four-and-a-half hours ahead of me, and why do these comments live there?

Writing resumes sucks. Sorry dude.

You sure make your career at Retek sound bland. Well, maybe it was from your perspective, but you didn't even put "kicked ass" or "amazing the shit out of numerous coworkers" in your descriptions. You're a frighteningly skilled fellow. Perhaps you could do something to imply that a little more in describing what you did....

Anyone know of anybody with Retek Implementation experience who is looking for a great job?

Looks like I am not the only one needing Retek Developer/Support candidates. If you have 6 months to 1 year of Retek experience I have a long term contract to hire opportunity in CA. e-mail or call me 800-300-4315 I have a need for 10 consultants.
