If only that internal (and external) conflict existed in business applications as well.

Too often, the programmer half wins out and we are left with boring and often useless business applications that do little more than annoy users and inspire excel gymnastics.

I just happened to play Portal through from start to finish yesterday afternoon. In one sitting. As you say, it's all "they" claim it to be and likely even more piled on top. I loved it.

However, even though I'm not prone to FPS motion sickness one of the levels almost made me lose my cookies. Just so your readers know.

There's an NPR show here that is *exactly* that. I listened to parts of it a few times before figuring out what it was - it's a Friday week-in-review show that "dissects" the week's headlines.

Except... meh. It often devolves into speculating on what someone else would say/think if they were in the studio. Which they're not.

At least it's only an hour long.

for TV listings, I recommend MeeVee.com - you can sign up and set your TV reception for whatever you have, then it gives you listings based on your preferences, but also just a list of channels and whatnot. I like it since there are still some channel numbers I can't remember after several years here. ~Maria

Nooooooooooo . . . the horrors of IKEA on the weekend! I've been there just twice since I moved here, and the second time I went at opening on a Tuesday and it was much better. I got my desk at Target and it is actually quite nice, so I recommend a trek to Daly City to the Target Greatland before trying IKEA again, unless you find the *perfect* thing you just have to get.

I've suffered from the same buyers remorse. I really hate paying full retail price for games that I found I did not always enjoy playing.

Hmmm. Perhaps it could incorporate "cottage"? (as in, "cottage industry"?)

One of my former co-workers had a weird hang-up about calling our users "users" - he said the only other business-people that use that term are drug dealers. I... was less concerned than David was.

Hm, I should've read that list more closely before I dashed out into the heat. Also, according to the driver of the taxi I eventually found, there was some sort of college football game on Saturday that had everyone in a tizzy. Go figure.

I'd so totally use this. As it is, I've pretty much given up on keeping status anywhere but Twitter, and now I'm somewhat careful about *that* because it's known to some folks at work. The presence dichotomy is too difficult to manage so I've punted.

I go back to the cognative notion that the brain can really focus on 7 +- 2 chunks of ideas. Bringing it to presence, I bet that that the maximum number of meaningful Internet presences that people could maintain is around 7. Since human beings are social animals, social animals graze socially in nearly the same pastures. Hence, all of these redundant presence and social media sites are due for a shakeout in the very near future. In the meantime, your way of managing presence looks promising. Good luck and keep us informed.
