I finally buckled down and worked on one of my New Year’s resolutions, and the results are as underwhelming as you might expect. Learning to work with Flash and ActionScript is as ugly a process as I had feared, but once you get over the hump of learning which little bits and pieces need to be checked and filled in, it’s really not that hard to get things up and running.

The project I gave myself was a little portmanteau game. What do you get when you cross Sudoku and Boggle? Mostly just a funny-sounding word, but hey, funny-sounding words are the bedrock that this site was founded upon. Here’s what else you get:

Play Sudoggle

I think Sudoggle is mildly amusing, but I’ll be (pleasantly) surprised if it keeps anyone occupied for more than a few minutes. There are a number of things that could be done to make it more compelling, but they would require a lot more effort than I’m willing to put into a learning project. I knew I was done working on the game when I caught myself pushing pixels around rather than improving the puzzle-generation algorithm, so I figured I should just let it go and release it into the wild. Perhaps my next exercise will be a little more ambitious — and involve some actual animation.
