The art film center of the Twin Cities, the Oak Street Cinema, is on the verge of closure. Competition for local audiences, poor marketing, and large debts have combined to leave the staff and board members with no clear answers to questions about whether the theater will be able to stay open past January 19.

Meanwhile, in Columbia Heights, the best Indian restaurant in the metro area has been closed for a month now. The owner of Udupi Cafe has been charged with “harboring illegal immigrants.” I’m not sure what’s more galling: that the restaurant here has been shut down, or that the Udupi franchise in Tempe, AZ is still open.

What is going on here? It’s no wonder I never go out anymore: All the places worth going to are closing down.
