So. Yeah.

I waited almost my entire life to see… that.

A lot of the reviews of this film have been evasive or apologetic, so let’s make one thing very clear: Revenge of the Sith was a bad movie. The other two movies in the trilogy were laughably awful, so the fact that this was simply “bad” seems to have convinced a lot of people (many of them not even hardcore Star Wars fans) to defend it. I’m not interested in playing a game of “if it’s less bad, then that makes it good.” It was a bad movie. The dialogue was bad, the actors weren’t even trying anymore, and the special effects — well, the effects were very well done, but they mostly made me think, “that’d be a fun level to play in the video game, but it’s kind of boring to watch.”

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’m not satisfied with this ending. Everybody keeps saying, “well, now we know what happened.” I already knew what happened. I didn’t need a movie to tell me that Anakin turns evil. (omg spoilerz!) I needed a movie to show me that he turns evil, to make me understand why it happens, to make me feel his descent, to make me see his darkness reflected in the despair of those around him. Revenge of the Sith did none of that. The crap script didn’t do it, and the wooden acting didn’t do it. When the only convincing performance in a film comes from a backwards-talking, computer-animated muppet, you know you’re in trouble.

The sad thing is, I’m not even particularly upset at how badly the whole thing turned out. I really don’t care. I had low expectations for Revenge of the Sith, and it lived down to them. I gave up on Lucas and Star Wars a long time ago, and stopped caring about whether or not I’m a happy fan, because I’m just not a fan anymore. So as I watched the credits roll at the end of a bad movie, I didn’t really feel dissatisfied or angry, I just felt done. I can now let go of Star Wars, write it off as just another childhood passion that I’ve grown out of, and move on with my life.

Of course, as I type this, I’ve got Lego Star Wars coming in the mail, and I’m still hoping for another Knights of the Old Republic game down the road. How much of an ex-fan does that make me?
