Well, I’m either a prophet, or it was a totally obvious idea. A while back, I wrote about my desire for a low-cost, low-effort service that would hook me up with MAME ROMs, a sort of iTunes for video games, minus the DRM and strange file formats. Now, someone has gone and started StarROMs, a service that does pretty much exactly that. The selection is skimpy at the moment; they’ve got a licensing agreement with Atari, but no one else, and getting license-holders to relax about emulation is no easy task. It’ll be interesting to see, though, if the proprietors’ claim that “half of those people downloading ROM files illegally would pay for them” leads to a successful business.
